Tips for traveling with dogs
Share
More people are choosing to bring their dogs along when they travel. There are many options now, including hotels/motels that accept dogs, as well as vacation rental services that let you search for pet-friendly accommodations.
We’ve been taking our dogs along for a long time, and we’ve learned a few things about making it easier. And about making sure our dogs are welcome back to the places we stay.
What to bring
You already know you have to bring an adequate supply of your dog’s food. You may not have thought about water. Particularly if your dog has a sensitive stomach, you’ll want to give them “home” or bottled water while on the road. Once you’ve arrived at your destination, gradually mix the tap water with bottled (or home), for a day or two.
A huge, washable blanket or two. The first thing we do after check-in is pick up the bedspread, blanket, or duvet and put it on the closet shelf. We replace it with our own blanket. We don’t have to worry about our dogs shedding or slobbering on the bedding if it’s our own.
Dish soap and dish towels. Especially if your dog’s food is moist. Housekeeping chores go with you on vacation when you travel with your dog. That’s okay. Their company is worth it.
Big bath or beach towels. The weather may cooperate or you may find yourself in a downpour. It’s better to use your own towels to dry your dog. Most places don’t appreciate muddy paw prints.
Throw blankets. To protect any furniture your dog may appropriate as a napping place. It’s just good form to keep your dog’s fur contained.
Other considerations
If you are staying in a hotel or motel, most require your dog to be confined to a crate if you’re not in the room. Some dogs are fine with that. Others may not be okay. It’s not a big deal if you’re running out for a little while to grab a meal. It’s another if you’re gone all day.
Some resort destinations have dog daycare that you can arrange ahead of time. It’s one less thing to worry about.
We know lots of people who have their own RVs. A crucial gadget is one that lets you check the temperature in the rig remotely. We know someone whose air conditioner failed. Luckily, they checked on it and were able to get back to their dogs before the temperature rose too much.
Have fun

One of our favorite places on the planet, the Dolphin Research Center in Grassy Key, Florida, has a “dogs welcome” policy. Many places do. They want people to come and spend the day. Check if the places on your itinerary welcome dogs. You may be pleasantly surprised. When we do travel during the summer, or to warmer places, we always bring our dogs' K9 Kool Coats. Torque isn't good at heat, but does just fine with his coat.
Dogs are pretty adaptable. As long as they’re with you, they’ll be happy to go places and do things. And they rarely ask for tacky souvenirs.
