Small and toy breed dogs are prone to an injury called collapsing trachea, which is the primary reason we recommend using a small dog harness instead of a collar for walking. Even accidental tugging—like when your dog spots a squirrel and lunges—can cause strain or damage to the throat and neck. A properly fitted harness helps reduce that pressure and makes walks safer and more comfortable.
But how do you know which harness is right for your little dog?
If your dog rarely pulls on leash and never tries to escape, choosing the best harness for small dogs may come down to personal preference. Every harness style has its strengths.
Types of Small Dog Harnesses
Step-In Small Dog Harnesses
As the name suggests, step-in harnesses open flat. Your dog steps into the openings, and the harness fastens along the spine—nothing goes over the head.
Most people don’t actually have their dog “step in.” Instead, they reach through each arm opening and gently guide the paws through, much like helping a toddler into a shirt.
This type of small dog harness sits lower on the chest, closer to the collarbone than the neck, making it the least likely to cause coughing or choking. The drawback is that dogs who resist wearing harnesses may be able to back out if the fit isn’t secure.
Standard Small Dog Harnesses
Standard harnesses are the classic style. They go over the dog’s head and include an adjustable strap around the chest.
While designs vary, most standard dog harnesses for small dogs feature one strap across the chest and another around the rib cage, offering a familiar and dependable fit.
Vest-Style Small Dog Harnesses
Vest harnesses provide more coverage across the chest, with straps along the dog’s back. They also go over the head and require lifting a paw into the correct opening.
Vest-style harnesses are often very comfortable. They’re designed without material rubbing in the “arm pits,” which helps prevent chafing and matting.

Why do I have to measure my dog? There are no universal sizing standards for dog harnesses. Each manufacturer creates their own size chart. Knowing your dog’s girth, neck, and length helps you choose the right fit.
How do I know if the harness fits correctly? You should be able to slide one or two fingers—laid flat—between your dog and the harness. Too loose and your dog may escape or experience chafing. Too tight and the harness won’t be comfortable or secure.
What if I order the wrong size or it doesn’t work for my dog? You may exchange or return any harness in new condition within 30 days of receipt. Exchanges ship at no additional cost.
